The Vatican Library has taken a groundbreaking step towards modernization by introducing a project that involves granting non-transferable NFTs to supporters of its manuscript collections. This initiative, currently in an “experimental” phase, is exclusively available to Italian backers of the Vatican Apostolic Library. By sharing the NFT project on their social media accounts, Italians can receive a “Silver NFT” until July 16 and gain access to a selection of 15 manuscripts in high-resolution images. Furthermore, those who provide financial support will be rewarded with a “Gold NFT” that allows access to high-resolution images of all 21 manuscripts in the special collection.
Aiming to enhance its digital presence, the Vatican Library has partnered with NTT DATA, a leading Japanese technology company, to progress its Web3 initiative. By leveraging Web3 advancements, the collaboration intends to expand the library’s digital reach and connect with a wider audience of supporters. NTT DATA’s significant investment of $4 billion into Web3 infrastructure underlines its commitment to the project. Moreover, the company’s plans to launch a crypto wallet through one of its subsidiaries by the end of 2024 will further solidify its position in the cryptocurrency realm.
Salesian Father Mauro Mantovani, prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library, emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting the library’s unique heritage. He highlighted NTT DATA’s crucial role in supporting the mission to make the collections accessible to the public, regardless of background or beliefs. The Vatican Library’s Web3 project aligns with its longstanding commitment to public outreach and modernization efforts. In 2020, the library revamped its website to enhance user experience, offering improved search capabilities and simplified access to digitized treasures such as manuscripts, archival materials, coins, medals, and incunabula.
Looking ahead, the Vatican Library expressed interest in exploring virtual or augmented reality tours of its premises. This innovative approach to engaging with the audience underscores the library’s dedication to staying abreast of technological advancements while preserving its historic artifacts.
