In a major breakthrough for Ethereum layer-2 scaling solutions, zkSync Era has introduced Boojum, a groundbreaking proof system based on the Scalable Transparent Argument of Knowledge (STARK). This system is poised to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of Ethereum scaling protocols by leveraging zero-knowledge rollups (ZK-rollups).
Boojum, a Rust-based cryptographic library developed by zkSync, implements an upgraded version of arithmetic circuits for zkSync Era and its ZK developer stack. Unlike its predecessors, Boojum eliminates the need for powerful hardware and servers, enabling regular users to run provers on everyday personal computers. This breakthrough means that network participation is now possible with just 16 gigabytes (GB) of GPU random-access memory (RAM), making it more accessible to a wider range of users.
Previously, zkSync heavily relied on Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge (zk-SNARKs) proof systems. While effective, zk-SNARKs lacked the transparency offered by zk-STARK-based systems. Before the introduction of Boojum, the system processed approximately 100 transactions per second. However, with the implementation of Boojum, users can expect a significant boost in processing capabilities.
The final stage of Boojum’s implementation involves wrapping the STARK proofs with a non-transparent pairing-based SNARK. This upgraded version of the current SNARK-based proof system offers reduced storage requirements and lower verification costs. As a result, the overall cost of the proof system and associated transactions will be significantly reduced, allowing for more seamless and cost-effective operations.
Boojum is currently live on the zkSync Era mainnet for testing purposes. Developers are actively testing “shadow proofs” using real production data to ensure a seamless migration and wider adoption of the new system. One of the key advantages of this upgrade is that it will be implemented without any regenesis, ensuring a smooth transition for all users.
As the crypto space continues to evolve, it is crucial to document and acknowledge significant developments. This article, capturing the introduction of Boojum by zkSync Era, not only marks a historic moment in the industry but also emphasizes the importance of supporting independent journalism within the crypto space. By collecting this article as an NFT (Non-Fungible Token), we not only preserve this moment in history but also contribute to the growth and innovation of the crypto ecosystem.
With Boojum’s revolutionary proof system, Ethereum scaling protocols are set to enter a new era of efficiency and accessibility. As more users embrace the power of zero-knowledge rollups and the advantages offered by zk-STARK-based systems, the potential for Ethereum and the broader blockchain industry is truly limitless.
